Coherency between the closing and opening of Surahs

Module Description

Coherency between the closing and opening of Surahs

In this module, we’ll explore the relationship between a surah’s initial and final verses, emphasising the meaningful and coherent connection between a surahs opening and closing.

By showcasing the Quran’s consistent and interconnected nature, we aim to underscore the evidence of its unique and unparalleled nature, inspiring awe and reverence for the Divine words. This is drawn upon a work by Dr Fadil al-Sāmarāiy, regarded by many Arabists as a modern-day Sibaway.

We aspire to delve into the following areas while covering the text.

Explore the interrelationship of themes and concepts elsewhere in the Quran and how a concept is elaborated upon throughout the Quran. This understanding can be practically applied in various contexts, empowering you to enhance your comprehension of the Quran’s depth and intricacy. You can confidently understand the Quran’s rich and complex landscape using these insights.

A closer look at the linguistical features of word order and the overall rhetorical effect of the Quran. Consider by many scholars the proof of the Quran’s inimitability.

Module Text

The course is based on Dr Fadil al-Sāmarrāiy’s work

‘The coherency between the opening and closing of each surah.’

The course is based on Dr Fadil al-Sāmarrāiy’s work, in which he draws on Islam’s scholarly works in tafsir and linguistics, particularly the area of rhetoric, otherwise known as pragmatics. In which he signifies the Qur’an’s interconnectedness and depth. The work presents the Qur’an as a cohesive and multi-layered corpus, with verses and surahs intricately woven to form a meaningful landscape. The book is divided into two parts. The first part deals with coherency between a surah’s opening and closing verses, and the second part deals with the end verses of a surah compared with the opening verses of the following surah. Thereby shedding light on the Qur’an’s completeness and persuasive vivacity.
