Fitrana is an obligatory donation made by every member of a household before Eid salah.
“The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) ordained Zakat ul Fitr [Fitrana] to purify the fasting person from indecent words or actions, and to provide food for the needy. It is accepted as Zakat for the person who gives it before the Eid prayer; but it is a mere Sadaqah for the one who gives it after the prayer.” [Abu Dawud and Ibn Majah]
Every member in your family needs to pay Fitrana in the amount of £6.00 to feed our brothers and sisters in Luton that are in need. We will personally deliver the Fitrana to the individuals before Eid to ensure they recieve this.
Abdullah Ibn ‘Umar (RA) narrates, ‘Prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon Him) enjoined the payment of one Saa’ of dates or one Saa’ of barley as Zakat-ul-fitr on every Muslim slave or free, male or female, young or old, and he ordered that it be paid before the people went out to offer the ‘Eid prayer.’ [Al-Bukhari]
Abdullah Ibn ‘Umar (RA) reports that Prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon Him) instructed us to give Sadaqah al-fitr of one saa’ of dates or one saa’ of barley. Abdullah Ibn ‘Umar mentions that the Sahabah later gave two mud (½ Sa’) of wheat in place of dates and barley. [Al-Bukhari]
How do we calculate the Sadaqah al-Fitr
The amount of the Sadaqah al-Fitr that we are informed of every year is usually the lowest amount. This document therefore serves to inform the public of the other commodity prices that are also from the Sunnah but which are not normally utilised for Sadaqah al-Fitr calculation primarily due to lack of awareness.
The prices below are based on specific commodities mentioned in the ahadith. According to the Hanafi school, its obligation can be fulfilled by donating ½ Sā‘ of wheat or 1 Sā‘ of either dates, barley, or raisins. The amount of these commodities and their retail values are outlined in the following table:
Wheat
Barley
Dates
Raisins
1/2 Sa (2.94 Litres)
1 Sa (5.88 Litres)
1 Sa (5.88 Litres)
1 Sa (5.88 Litres)

We have used the Wheat calculations
Average wheat bag 10kg
£10.00
10kg into litres
21 Litres
Average wheat bag 21 litres
£10.00
21 divide by 10
£2.10
Fitrana = 2.94 litres (2.10 * 2.94)
£6.17
We charge Fitrana using Wheat as you can see from the table above using average local (Luton) prices of wheat. This comes to £6.17, and we have averaged out the price to charge £6.
